Teaching English spelling in Japan

In short: Teaching English spelling in Japan starts with meaning, spoken vocabulary and sound-letter links learners have been taught. An English teacher in Japan can use a short small-group routine, then choose curriculum practice or checked weekly lists to suit the class.

Begin with a quick meaning check: ask learners to point, act or explain before asking them to spell. Distinguish an unfamiliar English word from difficulty remembering its letters. A learner who can repeat a word may still need help using it in a sentence. Keep oral-language support alongside written practice.

Teach one sound-spelling connection

Choose a pattern already introduced in the English programme. For an original short activity, use rain, train and paint if the group knows their meanings and has been taught ai. Say each word naturally, identify its sounds, and show how the two letters represent one sound in these examples.

Give pairs letter cards to build one word. Ask them to say it, explain it and use it in a sentence. Cover the model, write it, then compare. Add a word with a different spelling only when the teacher is ready to explain the contrast. The examples here are our teaching suggestions, not an official Japanese or Cambridge sequence.

The DfE spelling appendix is a reference for England curriculum content. It does not establish a Japanese school's programme. Our English-learning guide offers further meaning-first activities.

A weekly routine for a small group

  1. At the first meeting, check meaning and introduce three to five words around one taught feature. Model a complete sentence with each word.
  2. Practise together for five minutes: say, build, cover, write and compare. Let partners explain a spelling choice rather than race each other.
  3. Between meetings, offer a brief review. Give families a clear example and let them discuss meaning in their home languages.
  4. At the next meeting, dictate two short original sentences and revisit one earlier word. Check independent use as well as recall.
  5. Choose the next set from observed needs. Keep an unfamiliar word for oral work before increasing the written load.

With one lesson a week, treat these as stages across meetings rather than daily homework requirements. The Bell Foundation's homework guidance supports accessible tasks and home-language discussion. Adjust the pace to attendance and the time families can realistically give.

Spellito's existing Teacher voice reads English words and sentences aloud. Use it for practice after teaching; supply your own explanations and check learners' understanding. Explore the public demo before choosing the optional class tools.

  • Preview every chosen word and sentence; confirm that the level suits your group.
  • Use basic free practice for built-in words. Teacher-chosen assignments need the established verified teacher setup and approved parent/class connection.
  • A Class Licence is £49 for up to 30 pupils for 12 months, with no automatic renewal. Payment alone does not connect a pupil or grant access to private progress.

See the international-school setup guide and share the Japan family guide or expat guide. For qualification vocabulary, use the Cambridge Young Learners guide.

Questions from teachers

Can I assign an England year group by a learner's age?

Check the actual school year or grade and English programme first. England's year labels are not EAL proficiency levels, and other curricula differ. Choose words whose meanings and relevant sound-letter links have been taught.

Does Spellito teach Japanese pronunciation or translate lessons?

Spellito provides English read-aloud spelling practice with its existing Teacher voice. This guide makes no Japanese pronunciation or translation claim; the teacher supplies explanations and checks understanding.

What does a Class Licence cover?

A Class Licence costs £49 for one class of up to 30 pupils for 12 months, with no automatic renewal. Sending assignments and viewing private pupil progress require the established verified teacher and approved class connection.

Keep basic practice free. Pay only for the teaching tools you need.

Children can keep using basic ten-word practice without a payment. A teacher can create the free class identity first, then add a class or whole-school licence when the time-saving tools are useful.
