For English-speaking children living abroad
British spelling practice for expat families
If English is already a comfortable language for your child, a small home routine can keep British spelling familiar alongside their current schooling. Connect the words with what they are reading, writing and learning each week.

Try free spelling practiceStart with words that have a purpose
Use current school words, useful spellings from a book and words worth revisiting from recent writing. If you follow an English curriculum, use the DfE English programmes of study alongside school guidance. These programmes apply to England; spelling forms part of wider reading, vocabulary and writing.
Choose a manageable set that builds on what your child has been taught. There is no need to work through a large list simply because it has a particular year label. Ask their teacher which patterns or words deserve attention.
A small weekly routine
Here is an example to adapt around schoolwork and family life:
- Choose. Start with a few current words and a couple to revisit. Check meanings and notice useful sounds, roots or letter groups.
- Recall. Say each word in a sentence, cover its spelling and try writing it from memory. Check together and identify the part to practise again.
- Return later. Try the words in a different order on another day, including some previously remembered. Notice them in shared reading.
- Use them. Write a short message, description or book response. Check spelling in that writing and carry useful words into the next week.
For a child who has learnt colour, colourful and favourite, notice colour inside colourful. Cover the words before recall, then use them: My favourite picture has colourful flowers. This connects spelling with meaning and a real sentence.
Respect the local school’s spelling conventions
Ask which form of English the school expects in assignments. British practice at home can serve another writing context. Seeing color in an American book is an opportunity to discuss that difference.
American spellings are valid in American English. British English also accepts alternatives: organise and organize are both valid. Avoid a blanket rule that every z spelling is wrong, and keep proper names and quotations as published. Our British and American spelling guide explains common examples.
If a return to the UK is planned, confirm the receiving school’s curriculum, year placement and assessment arrangements directly. Using a spelling app or released SATs material does not establish eligibility to sit SATs.
Use Spellito alongside your home routine
Basic ten-word practice uses built-in words and is free without a child name, account or payment. Optional Family Pass adds parent-entered home lists and private progress for up to five children. The standard UK family price is £9 for 12 months, with no automatic renewal; check the price offered where you buy.

Confirmed pupils can receive class-funded homework without Family Pass. A parent selecting a school does not by itself connect a child to a class or deliver teacher assignments. Your teacher must join, have the required class funding and confirm the family’s request.
If the school is missing, choose Enter school details manually during school selection and provide its name, town or city and country, with a public website if known. This is a private review request, not automatic school approval or a class link. Parents can skip school selection and carry on practising.
