British vs American spelling for UK primary children
In short: for ordinary schoolwork in England, use the standard British spelling taught by the school. American spelling is valid English, but an American-only variant may not receive credit in an English spelling assessment. Keep the original form in proper names and quotations.

The school answer
Which spelling should my child use at school?
Use the form taught and modelled by the school. The current optional Key Stage 1 grammar, punctuation and spelling framework says that British spellings receive credit where standard British and American forms differ. It names colour, catalogue and theatre as examples. The same framework also warns against a false rule: organise and organize are both accepted alternatives in standard British English.
That framework is written for an optional assessment, not as a lesson plan. The wider English programme of study remains the teaching source. For everyday homework, follow the school’s model, use a British dictionary when unsure and ask before treating a valid alternative as an error.

What are common British and American spelling pairs?
These are common forms a UK primary pupil may meet in books, games, websites and autocorrect. The table is a reference, not a weekly list to memorise all at once. Choose only the words that connect to current schoolwork or a repeated real-life mistake.

Two context-sensitive exceptions matter: British English normally uses programme, but computer program; and metre is a unit of length, while a meter is a measuring device. Teach the meaning with the spelling.
Which differences need more than a word-pair table?
British licence is normally a noun and license a verb: a licence, but to license. British practice is the noun and practise the verb. American English usually uses license and practice for both jobs.
A spelling checker may miss these because both forms are real words. Ask what the word is doing in the sentence instead of trusting the coloured underline.
When should the American spelling stay?
- Proper names: World Trade Center and Pearl Harbor keep their official forms.
- Direct quotations: copy the source accurately and use quotation marks.
- Titles and brands: retain the creator’s or organisation’s published spelling.
- American setting or voice: a deliberate character voice may use its own variety consistently.
A common source of confusion
What if the tablet keeps changing the spelling?
Check the keyboard and document language. It should normally say English (United Kingdom), not English (United States), for UK schoolwork. Changing that setting reduces unwanted substitutions, but it does not replace teaching: autocorrect cannot always know whether the sentence needs licence or license, and it can hide the spelling the child actually recalls.

Should UK primary children use British or American spelling?

Should a child change Center in an American place name?
No. Proper names keep their official spelling, so World Trade Center stays Center and Pearl Harbor stays Harbor. The same principle applies to company names, book titles and quoted text.
Why does a tablet keep changing British spellings?
