What evidence is worth keeping?
Keep the date, exact word and immediate next action. A circle against necessary is more useful when the teacher can see whether the problem is the doubled consonant, an unstressed vowel or recall after a delay.
Ofsted's Research review series: English says assessment should identify the words or parts of words pupils find difficult. It also warns that spelling instruction should not become decontextualised word lists detached from phonics, morphology, etymology and writing.

Should I type a pupil's name into the tracker?
No. The browser form asks only for the words. Add a pupil or class code by hand after printing, following your school's data-handling practice.
Why does the tracker avoid percentages and mastery labels?
A percentage can hide which exact words or word parts need attention. One correct result also does not prove lasting learning or transfer into ordinary writing.
How often should spelling be reviewed?
There is no single statutory interval. Review after a meaningful gap and use the result to decide whether to stop, reteach, practise or check transfer into writing.
Can I use statutory words in the tracker?
Yes, when they fit the content being taught or a genuine pupil need. The Years 3–4 and Years 5–6 lists sit alongside phonics, spelling patterns, morphology and etymology.
Is this a dyslexia or SEND assessment?
No. It records simple classroom observations and cannot diagnose dyslexia, special educational needs or the cause of a spelling difficulty.
