Free spelling test by year

This free spelling test gives your child a ten-word spelling check by year, with read-aloud words and a final score.

No hints or corrections between words. No account, child name or payment needed; answers and results are not saved.

This is a practice check, not a SATs paper or a standardised spelling age test. Follow your school's current learning when choosing a year.

How the spelling check works

  1. Choose a year. The check selects ten words from its public word list.
  2. Listen as Teacher reads the word in a sentence. Use Repeat word whenever you want to hear it again.
  3. Type your spelling and choose Submit answer, then Next word. Your answer stays unmarked on screen while you work through the set.
  4. After all ten answers, see your score out of ten and the correctly spelt words you missed.

Which year check is best for your child?

Choose words your child has had a chance to learn. A year label describes the source list; it is not an assessment of your child's age or ability.

Best for: choosing a familiar word list
Year and word listBest for
Year 1 wordsCommon exception examples alongside your school's phonics programme
Year 2 wordsCommon exception examples; use the Year 2 guide for wider patterns
Year 3 wordsSpellito's optional 20-word starter sample from the shared Years 3–4 list
Year 4 wordsSpellito's optional 20-word review sample from the shared Years 3–4 list
Year 5 wordsReviewing the shared Years 5–6 statutory words
Year 6 wordsRevisiting the same Years 5–6 statutory words before further practice

For wider Year 2 learning, see Year 2 spelling patterns. Years 1 and 2 use the DfE's named common exception examples; teaching common exception words is statutory, while the named examples are non-statutory. The shared Years 3–4 list explains the source of our optional samples.

What to learn from the result

The score shows how many of these ten words your child recalled today. Look at a missed word together: compare its letters, find the part that needs attention and say it in a sentence. Several errors with the same ending may give you one useful pattern to practise.

Choose Practise the words you missed to switch to ordinary practice with immediate correction. The button includes the number missed. Try again repeats the same ten-word check. Return to a year choice above for another selection; words can overlap.

Leave a gap before another check and notice whether the words appear correctly in later writing. A high score on one set does not establish lasting recall; a low score does not explain the cause of a difficulty. Keep the next step small and praise your child's effort.

Spellito's ordinary practice interface. The free spelling check uses read-aloud words and a typing box, with hints and corrections hidden until the final result.

A calm next step for parents

Use the linked year lists to read the words together and print a checklist. Try look, say, cover, write, check for a few missed words, or follow our guide to learning spellings at home. Your school's current words remain the best starting point.

For the separate national test format, see Year 6 SATs spelling practice and released papers. Full 20-word ordered paper sessions are a paid feature. Family Pass is £9 for 12 months for up to five children, with no automatic renewal or automatic charges. Your own school lists, hints and saved progress are optional paid features; the ten-word check stays free.

Spelling test questions

Is this spelling test free?

Yes. Each year choice starts a free ten-word spelling check. No account, child name or payment is needed, and answers and results are not saved.

Does the check give hints or correct each answer?

There are no hints or corrections between words. Teacher reads each word in a sentence, and Repeat word plays it again. After all ten answers, you see your final score and the words you missed.

Is this a SATs paper or a standardised spelling age test?

This is a practice check, not a SATs paper or a standardised spelling age test. It cannot give a spelling age, diagnose a difficulty or predict a SATs result. Released SATs papers are a separate option.

Which words will my child hear?

Each check selects ten words from the chosen year's list. Years 1 and 2 use common exception examples; Years 3 and 4 use Spellito's optional starter and review samples from the shared statutory list. Years 5 and 6 use the same shared statutory list. Schools choose their teaching sequence.

What happens if we try the missed words?

Practise the words you missed switches to ordinary practice with immediate correction. Try again repeats the same ten-word check; it does not select a new set. Return to a year choice on this page to start another selection.

What does Family Pass add?

Family Pass costs £9 for 12 months for up to five children, with no automatic renewal or automatic charges. It adds your own school lists, hints, saved progress and full 20-word ordered released SATs paper sessions. The ten-word check stays free.
